4 Reasons Why Hiring in January is Too Late

4 Reasons Why Hiring in January is Too Late | FGS Recruitment

As 2016 nears its end, many businesses will start winding down ready for the quiet Christmas period and in preparation for January and everything a new year brings.

Many employers will have already planned out their strategy and hiring plans for 2017 and choose January to start this process. In their eyes, candidates will start looking for a new job in the new year with the ‘new year, new start’ mentality. However, this could well be the wrong approach and here’s why:

1. The competition is greater in January

Companies hiring in January have to be extra-competitive when it comes to salary and will have to be really quick throughout the hiring process in order to be in with a chance of securing the best talent for their jobs.

By starting the hiring process now, you can easily get 1st, 2nd and even 3rd interviews conducted and if you’re really quick, job offers out ready for a January start. This will give you a great advantage over your competitors as whilst they are frantically hiring in the New Year, you’ll be calmly conducting inductions.

2. Three-month notice periods are a thing!

Do you want new starters to join in Q1 or April? It’s easy to forget that candidates may have three month notice periods or six month non-compete clauses in their contracts therefore by hiring in December, you’re ensuring they can start as early as possible in the New Year.

3. It’s easier for candidates to get time off in December

January is a manic time of year for most businesses and you’ll generally find that it’s harder for candidates to take time off in January for interviews. As December starts to quieten down, it’ll be easier and less suspicious for job seekers to take time off this month for interviews.

4. Give someone an early Christmas present

Offering someone a job before Christmas makes a wonderful present. Both you and the successful candidate can enter the Christmas period with a huge weight off your shoulders leaving you to enjoy mince pies and mulled wine with family and let’s be honest, the turkey always tastes better without added stress!

The candidate knows that they are starting the New Year with a new job and won’t have to fight with all the competition and you as the employer can feel smug that you’re ahead of your competitors.
